The North District borders with the Shenzhen city with multiple border checkpoints. Most of the population in North District lives in the public housing estates in the Fanling and Sheung Shui town centres.
The rest are mostly rural residents scattered in villas and houses built on formerly farmlands. The North District is extremely popular to cross border tourists from China, many of whom are very keen on buying essential and mid-range items from shops located in the Sheung Shui town centre.
